2734 - AlpenPix (Wild) - 2010-11-30 (Dimension: 1742 x 2338 pixels - Counter: 6409) Castilleja sulphurea Locality: USA - Colorado - Peak 7 area, Breckenridge, Colorado, elevation 10,000 feet. Photographer: Jane Hendrix Note: Castilleja sulphurea varies in color from nearly white to sulphur-yellow. It grows happily with C. miniata and Lupinus argenteus var. parviflorus, blooming together on the 4th of July for a patriotic "red, white and blue" display. C. sulphurea attains a height of about 12 inches in the wild area behind our house but, when dispersed seed establishes itself in my cultivated gardens, it can reach to 18 inches or more with many long, flowering branches. I have not seen any hybridization between C. sulphurea and C. miniata; however, where C. rhexifolia has been planted in a cultivated garden, if C. sulphurea gets established close by, subsequent generations of C. rhexifolia become progressively less rosy and more sulphur-yellow.
