Photographer: Jane Hendrix Note: Littleleaf or Alpine Alumroot is usually overlooked by hikers and wildflower enthusiasts because its small, creamy flower heads tend to blend into the alpine mosaic. But if you look closely, you'll see a a compact mat of beautiful, leathery,blue-green, ruffled leaves that, by themselves, make this species an attractive addition to the cultivated rock garden. It's easy from seed and is not fussy about soil, moisture or location and it retains its compact shape under cultivation. As with most of the alpine species on Hoosier Ridge, this short Heuchera blooms in early July. (Sent: Alpine-l@nic.surfnet.nl) (Click on the picture to enlarge) |
