1477 - AlpenPix (Wild) - 2007-02-03 (Dimension: 1423 x 1019 pixels - Counter: 5002) Opuntia basilaris Photographer: Jane Hendrix Note: Beavertail Cactus; 18" tall; magenta. This cactus does not have spines - but it DOES have nasty, little glochids radiating from each dimple in the flat pads. Unsuspecting tourists have handled the benign-looking pads only have those nearly-invisible glochids imbed themselves in hands and fingers. Photo taken at Katherine Landing Ranger Station, Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Mohave County, Arizona on March 20. (Click on the picture to enlarge) |
