2701 - AlpenPix (Garden) - 2010-11-29 (Dimension: 1742 x 2338 pixels - Counter: 4270) Senecio pudicus Locality: USA - Colorado - Mountain View Experimental Gardens, Peak 7 area, Summit County, 10,000 feet elevation. Photographer: Jane Hendrix Note: This Summit County native is a welcomed resident in my wildflower garden. It has no ray flowers but has very attractive, maroon involucres and long, narrow, gray-green leaves. Visitors always ask the identity of this species and are surprised to learn it grows in the Breckenridge, Colorado area. In the wild, it's lost among tall grasses and produces only a few flowers per plant. But in my wild garden, it reaches its full potential. It's easy to grow, needs no special soil or additional water, produces abundant seed but never becomes a self-sowing pest. (Sent: Alpine-l@nic.surfnet.nl) (Click on the picture to enlarge) |
