Photographer: Klaus Hendrix Note: Wild Chives was my first Allium species. It's so easy to grow, demanding nothing at all from me. The leaner its site, the more compact and floriferous is its habit. It performs well in dry, acidic soil, in hard-packed clay soil on the shoulder of our road, in boggy soil in part shade and on a sunny berm. If grown in rich, fertile soil, however, it will become top-heavy and floppy. Of course, all parts are edible -- an added bonus. It stands about 8 inches tall in flower on the poorest site to about 18 inches tall on the best site and produces a large crop of easily-germinated seeds. It blooms for a month or more, beginning in mid-July. (Sent: Alpine-l@nic.surfnet.nl) (Click on the picture to enlarge) |
