114 - AlpenPix (Wild) - 2007-02-02 (Dimension: 1361 x 1193 pixels - Counter: 5965) Arctomecon californica Photographer: Jane Hendrix Note: Las Vegas Bear Paw Poppy;8-24 inches tall from a very stout taproot; large, bright yellow flowers; wedge-shaped, gray-green leaves covered with long, white hair, giving the plant a soft, furry appearance. Las Vegas Bear Paw Poppy is endemic to the northern Mojave Desert and is quite rare. It prefers soils high in gypsum (up to 69%) as shown in these photos. Photos taken at about 1,200 feet in Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Clark County, Nevada on March 26. (Click on the picture to enlarge) |
