![]() (Dimension: 656 x 751 pixels - Counter: 5998) Chimaphila umbellata ![]() Locality: USA - Colorado - Peak 7 area, Summit County, Colorado, in upper Montane forest of lodgepole pine and Engelmann spruce at 10,000 feet elevation. Photographer: Klaus Hendrix Note: Chimaphila umbellata goes by the common name "Pipsissewa" in my area. It likes the same cool, dry, densely-shaded, acidic habitat as its relative, Pyrola, but is much less common. C. umbellata forms isolated colonies of rhizomatous plants with beautiful, dark-green, leathery leaves but few flowers. Several years may pass without a single flower being produced. When it does bloom, it's in early to late August. (Sent: Alpine-l@nic.surfnet.nl) ![]() |
