2777 - AlpenPix (Wild) - 2010-12-03 (Dimension: 1742 x 2338 pixels - Counter: 4958) Pedicularis racemosa Locality: USA - Colorado - On Peak 6 in scattered Engelmann spruce at elevation of about 11,300 feet, Summit County, Colorado. Photographer: Jane Hendrix Note: Pedicularis racemosa is the only Pedicularis in my area that does not have ferny leaves, making it easy to be identified. Its whimsical flowers have given such imaginative common names as Ram's Horn and Sickletop Lousewort. On moist, fertile sites, P. racemosa produces green leaves but on lean sites, it extracts what it needs from surrounding plants and its leaves are then dark red --- s striking contrast to its creamy-white flowers. Ram's Horn adapts well to garden life and, once established, needs no special care. It grows to aheight of about 12 inches in the wild and about 14 inches in my garden and blooms in early August.
