Photographer: Jane Hendrix Note: This is a native-to-my-area Polemonium that grows in the worst "soil" along roadways. Some might call it a weed. Many years ago, my friend saw it growing in the gravelly shoulder of a local road and she yanked it out of the ground with full force and handed it to me. She thought it might be a nice addition to my wild garden. With no water or moist soil to protect its taproot and at least 45 minutes from home, I didn't think it had a prayer of surviving -- but it did! Given a safe home protected from vehicle traffic, good soil and moisture, it turned into a handsome specimen, producing a full complement of flowers in late July. Unfortunately, one major problem with this species made itself known in a couple years when the plant fully matured. It's the skunkiest Polemonium I have ever experienced. It made the whole garden reek. After putting up with it for another 2 years, I moved to a wild area behind our house and it is living there very happily and not offending anyone's nose. Other than its strong odor, it's a beautiful species with narrow leaflets and gray-green foliage, growing to about 30 inches. (Sent: Alpine-l@nic.surfnet.nl) (Click on the picture to enlarge) |
