2746 - AlpenPix (Wild) - 2010-11-30 (Dimension: 1742 x 2338 pixels - Counter: 6057) Primula parryi Locality: USA - Colorado - Along a stream in a boggy area above Pass Lake, Summit County, Colorado at about 11,800 feet elevation. Photographer: Jane Hendrix Note: Parry's Primrose is one of the tallest alpine species in my Rocky Mountain area. It loves rich, damp soil but otherwise is not fussy about its environment. It will grow in the shade of our subalpine spruce-fir forests as well as on the late snowbeds on the north-facing slope of Hoosier Ridge. But this photo shows it at its best: long, succulent leaves with study flower stems topped with large, rose-magenta blossoms, enjoying the benefits of full sun and a clear mountain stream. P. parryi were at the height of bloom at this location on July 17, 2008. (Sent: Alpine-l@nic.surfnet.nl) (Click on the picture to enlarge) |
