2722 - AlpenPix (Garden) - 2010-11-30 (Dimension: 2318 x 1762 pixels - Counter: 5749) Trollius laxus Locality: USA - Colorado - Mountain View Experimental Gardens, Peak 7 area, Breckenridge, Colorado, elevation 10,000 feet, USDA Zone 4. Photographer: Jane Hendrix Note: Trollius laxus is one of my local native species that is always found in association with Caltha leptosepala in very wet, boggy areas in either full sun or part shade. The flowers are usually a light cream color but are sometimes pure white. It adapts well to cultivation, as evidenced by the specimen in the photo, and will gently self-sow. It begins to bloom when the flower stems are only an inch tall. As the blooming season progresses, the stems elongate to a height of about 12 to 14 inches. T. laxus is one of my earliest-blooming native wildflowers, coming into flower in mid- to late May. (Sent: Alpine-l@nic.surfnet.nl) (Click on the picture to enlarge) |
