Trillium sulcatum
![](img/google.gif)
Locality: USA - Tennessee -
Photographer: Eric Gouda
Note: It keys out to T.flexipes (Case 1997), because of a white ovary, but flowers of T.sulcatum can be white and probably the ovary can be white too?
The distinct boat shaped (not clear what this has to do with sulcate) sepals. Petals are slightly sulcate.

Identification:
- Identification: Jim McClements (2010-04-28) =T. simile?
- white sulcatum and simile can easily be confused. Both have the characteristic "candle-snuffer" profile and the main difference to me is size. In the "erectum group" I put no reliance on the color of any flower part. I can't tell from the photo how large the plant is, but I'd bet on simile. (Sent: Trillium-l@nic.surfnet.nl) - Note: Eric Gouda (2010-04-29) - It is about the size of a T.grandiflora
Stem 30 cm; leaves 13x12 cm; pedicel 7 cm; sepals 3x1 cm; petals 40x18 mm not overlapping. In the morning it is not smelling, but in the after noon it was faintly smelling fungus like (little bit sweet and not unpleasant) (Sent: Trillium-l@nic.surfnet.nl) - Note: Eric Gouda (2010-04-29) - Jim, Case is stressing that the flower of T.simile (comparing withT.sulcatum) are not strongly reflexed at the attachment (flowers facing in the same direction as the pedicel, not the case in my specimen), and the petals 1.5 times the sepals (<1.5x in T.s.) and the stem 1.5 times the leaves (>2x in T.s.). - Note: Gene Bush (2010-05-06) - So, What does one name these trilliums illustrated and spoken about here... ??? Flexipes is supposed to flex... what white ovary... or, they do here in southern IN. Simile is supposed to have a dark ovary, yes? Sulcatum has a dark ovary. There are also plants in between the ones illustrated and
erectum, be they in white, cream, or dark forms in petals.
Is there a definitive answer?
