2955 - Woodland (Garden) - 2011-02-09 (Dimension: 990 x 770 pixels - Counter: 14481) Trillium rhizome structure Locality: USA, New Jersey - Fern Hill Farm, Clarksboro New Jersey Photographer: John Gyer Note: This composite picture shows the skotomorphogenetically growing stem within the sheath of cataphylls and a section through a rhizome near the apex. The dissected bud has a barely visible small mound of cataphylls to the right of the stem. In the section this mound is seen to contain two developing buds. The darker one will develop into a stem the year AFTER the next spring. The smaller will become a stem the year after that. This trillium rhizome apex contains a three-year supply of developing buds visible at this magnification. (Sent: Trillium-l@science.uu.nl) (Click on the picture to enlarge) |
