2956 - Woodland (Garden) - 2011-02-09 (Dimension: 990 x 770 pixels - Counter: 5898) Trillium erectum and Trillium underwoodii Locality: USA, New Jersey - Fern Hill Farm. Clarksboro New Jersey Photographer: John Gyer Note: This composite picture shows that in a particularly strong rhizome, two or more of the buds in the apex can grow into mature stems. The size and maturity level at any time in their growth indicates the sequence of their growth initiation. Since each of these buds results in a flowering stem, they produce no additional meristems and thus the rhizome does not branch . New buds form only at the rhizome apex.
