Pitcairnia atrorubens
(Uploaded as: Pitcairnia sp.)
Locality: Panama - El Cope
Photographer: Peter Tristram
Note: At the cross at El Cope pass. Terrestrial, about 50cm tall with at least 3 other Pitcairnia spp. (Sent: brom-l@nic.surfnet.nl)
Identification: Solved
- Note: Bruce Dunstan (2010-08-28) - Pedro, we saw this at Altos del Maria, between El Valle and Cerro Campana. I thought it looked like a purple P. squarosa (Sent: brom-l@nic.surfnet.nl)
- Identification: HEL (2010-08-30) =P. cf squarrosa
- I suppose this may be var. colorata but the plant seems quite different from Pit. squarrosa from NW Ecuador. (Sent: brom-l@nic.surfnet.nl)
- Identification: Eric Gouda (2010-08-30) =Pitcairnia atrorubens
- Why not the highly variable Pitcairnia atrorubens that grow from Mexico to Panama? I think P.squarrosa has a more slender inflorescence, and is restricted to Colombia and Ecuador.
What is the petal color? (Sent: brom-l@nic.surfnet.nl) - Note: Peter Tristram (2010-08-31) - Plant is post anthesis and petal colour could be very important. I tend to think it's more atrorubens than squarrosa (var. colorata) but really neither.
- Note: Harry Luther (2010-09-01) - I might note that many taxa "restricted" to one or two countries are turning up all over the place, ie; Guz. donnell-smithii from Costa Rica to Ecuador. HEL
