Note: A very beautiful plant. I do not know the name of this. (Sent: brom-l@science.uu.nl)
Identification:
- Note: Guillermo Luis Rivera (2018-02-14) - I posted pics of this plant over 8 years ago, again 4, and 3 years ago. It does not have a name in spite of being very showy, close to the road, south of Cuenca. So Tillandsia sp for now
- Identification (13604): Walter Till (2018-02-14) =Tillandsia fosteri
- See image of Isotype in Kew herbarium
- Note (13604): Jerry Raack (2018-02-15) - Something doesn't add up when you look at both the Kew Herbarium specimen of T. fosteri and read the description of T. fosteri in Smith and Downs. The plants that I photographed and the ones Guillermo Rivera photographed are one in the same species, but they differ dramatically from the description of T. fosteri. First, as can easily be seen by the photo, this plant grows to a maximum of 1 meter high, while the description of T. fosteri says it grows to 15 dm. Further, T. fosteri has a pendant or semi-pendant inflorescence, and our photos clearly show every plant is fully upright with the spike far exceeding the foliage, which contradicts what is in the description for T. fosteri. So, I have a hard time believing what is shown in the photos is T. fosteri. Would you agree with this assessment? Just a side note, that pictures 5 and 6 here were uploaded by Guillermo Rivera of plants he photographed in past years. The first 4 pictures are of plants I photographed in January 2018.
