(Dimension: 384 x 276 pixels - Counter: 17129)
Guzmania sp.
Locality: Colombia - north of Manizales
Photographer: Guillermo Rivera (Sent: brom-l@science.uu.nl)
Identification: pending
(Click on the picture to enlarge)
- Identification (10933): Eric Gouda (2013-04-08) =Guzmania sp.
- A very interesting Guzmania also depicted in Oliva-Esteve 2000: 191. It seems to be close to G.madisonii, but much larger in size. (Sent: brom-l@science.uu.nl)
- Add Note (10933): Jeffrey Kent (2013-04-10) - This plant is widespread from Ecuador to Venezuela. No one has been able to get a legitimate ID on this species. First found by Leonard Kent in 1970 near Bogota, I have had this in cultivation since then. The plant should receive a name. I can send plant material from the initial collection with data, etc. (Sent: brom-l@science.uu.nl)
- Add Note (10933): Peter Tristram (2013-04-11) - Used to be called G. pennellii. HEL told me it would be described as a new species if he had collection data so maybe another taxonomist can with the current info. Pleased to see this riddle solved. See the BCR on www.bsi.org for the G. Penny Wise entry. Derek thought best to give cultivar name pending a description. It's tough as nails over here so quite common now, under both names.. (Sent: brom-l@science.uu.nl)
- Add Note (10934): Eric Gouda (2013-04-11) - G. pennellii is one of those mysterious species names with a short description. It must have 5 mm long floral bracts (just exceeding the pedicels) and white petals, so that does not fit this one nor the depicted plant by Esteve 2000: 182 (also JBS). I could not find the type (image) yet. (Sent: brom-l@science.uu.nl)
- Identification (10933): Guillermo Rivera (2013-04-11) =Guzmania pennellii
(Sent: brom-l@science.uu.nl)
- Add Note (10933): Uncle Derek (2013-04-12) - The holotype in NY seems to have gone missing and we only have Smith's drawing to refer to. It dose not equate with G. pennellii. It is safer to use the name 'Penny Wise' (Sent: brom-l@science.uu.nl)
