11702 - Bromeliads (Garden) - 2014-07-27 (Dimension: 1530 x 2050 pixels - Counter: 16596) Guzmania killipiana (Uploaded as: Guzmania tarapotina?) Locality: Ecuador - Loja - Road 59km South of Vilcabamba at 6000 ft elevation January 1990 with Jeffery Kent Photographer: Jerry Raack Note: I have grown this now for 24 years and finally bloomed it. Quite large, it is 163c, tall. Leaves are 79cm long by 10 to 11 cm wide. Scapes are 10 to 11 cm tall by 7 to 8cm wide at base. Flowers are nearly 20 cm across when open, with 6 anthers (2 per petal). Flowers contain nectar which attracts ants in my area. The inflorescence began to emerge in January of this year, and the first flowers did not open until end of June. Interesting species, but not particularly beautiful. Communication with Jose Manzanares indicated it might be Guzmania tarapotina or Guzmania killipiana. Anyone else care to weigh in on what this is? Identification: solved (Click on the picture to enlarge)
