13678 - Bromeliads (Wild) - 2018-03-12 (Dimension: 2030 x 1550 pixels - Counter: 8057) Tillandsia (Mezobromelia) schimperiana (Uploaded as: Vriesea (Mezobromelia) rubrobracteata) Locality: Ecuador, Zamora-Chinchipe Province - East on the road from Los Encuentros toward the Condor Mountains. Growing terrestrially amid dense ground-cover ferns and low on trees along the road. Also found on the road from El Pangue to Limon along road cuts. Elevation 1630 meters on both roads. Photographer: Jerry Raack Note: Currently in the genus Vriesea, but may belong in Mezobromelia. I consider this to be one of the most beautiful of all bromeliads to be found in this area. It is startingly carmin red. Flowers were not open at the time I saw it in the 3rd week of January. The description in the Bromeliad Encylopedia says this plant grows to 40 cm in height, and the inflorescence has 10 to 12 spikes. But the plants I saw were all much larger than this, and had as many as 30 to 35 spikes on a single inflorescence. Further the Encyclopedia says it grows to 50 cm in diameter, but these plants were closer to 80 cm in diameter. An extra large clone, or is the description inaccurate?
